Head Shot for Wiki.jpgPresenter: Clayton
Topic: Urban High School Students Give Back: Creating PSA's for Non-Profits.

CONTEXT:
The video program (THTV) at Thurston High School received a small grant from MEEMIC Insurance Company to produce public service announcements for non profit organizations in Detroit, Redford Township, and the surrounding area. The result was eight short videos which are now being used by the organizations and are being hosted on their websites, FaceBook pages, and other social media sites. This round table discussion will give an overview of how students can use their voice and their creativity to create digital media projects for a client/authentic audience who may not have the tools to create their own media.

1. Where do I start?
  • Whom should I contact?
  • What equipment can I use?
  • I am scared! Will my students be able to conduct a meeting with representatives of our community?

2. How will my students get acquire media for the production?
  • Talent Release forms?
  • Field trips to acquire media?
  • Student follow through...what if they want to give up?
  • What if the client doesn't like the finished product?
